The Physician Scientist Program at St. Anna Children’s Hospital and St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute offers dedicated physicians a unique opportunity to combine clinical practice with cutting-edge research. The goal is to train a new generation of experts who will lead both in patient care and in advancing pediatric oncology through scientific innovation.

This structured career program is designed for physicians aiming to pursue a dual role in clinical care and research, actively driving translational progress. It promotes early independence in research, supports third-party funding acquisition, and enhances the quality of clinical studies and innovative therapeutic approaches.

With a clear structure across two phases (total duration: 8 years), intensive mentoring by clinical and scientific experts, targeted leadership training, and an optional international component, the program provides optimal conditions for an outstanding career as a Physician Scientist in pediatric oncology.

 
 

Your responsibilities

  • Clinical care of pediatric oncology patients, including active participation in expert panels (e.g., tumor boards)
  • Planning, conducting, and publishing of an independent research program
  • Leadership of research staff funded through research grants at St. Anna CCRI
  • Participation in multicenter studies and translational projects
  • Grant applications and strategic project development
  • Supervision of PhD students
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Participation in internal and external training sessions and conferences
  • Teaching activities
 
 

Your profile

  •  Medical degree and license to practice medicine
  • Specialist training in pediatrics
  • Several years of research experience in oncology, lab experience is preferred
  • Willingness to contribute ideas to international research projects in the relevant field
  • Track record of scientific publications and successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding
  • PhD or habilitation desirable
  • Concept proposal for an independent research program
  • Excellent German skills required for clinical work
  • Fluent English and solid understanding of scientific terminology
  • Willingness to engage in university teaching activities
  • Motivation for a long-term clinical-scientific career

  • Concept for a research project with an innovative research question, translational relevance, rough planning (including summary, timeline, milestones, staffing), and feasibility

Selection Process:

  1. Screening and pre-selection based on defined core criteria
  2. Qualitative evaluation of the research proposal by a panel of representatives from St. Anna Children’s Hospital, St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute, and independent experts
  3. Hearing of top-ranked candidates by a committee of decision-makers from St. Anna Children’s Hospital, St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute, and external experts
  4. Negotiation and final selection of candidates

The annual gross salary is at least €107,502.08 (full-time basis) and may be higher depending on relevant prior
experience. On-call duties, night and Sunday shifts, and special class fees are compensated separately.
